The Last of Scotland (2023).
A series of work developed in response to a visit to Carsethorn Pier in Kirkbean, South West Scotland. Originally constructed in 1831, remains of the Pier, situated on Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway are visible as 31 upstanding and prone wooden posts or piles.
Carsethorn Pier was a significant departure point for the Scottish diaspora in 1800s. Records show up to 21,000 people from the Dumfries area emigrated from Carsethorn Pier in the mid-late 19th century. Most emigrants left for a new life in places such as the United States of America, Australia and Canada. The Pier was also the departure point for many Scottish convicts being deported to penal colonies.
